Vaseline story
In 1859 Robert Chesebrough, a chemist, traveled from Brooklyn to
Pennsylvania at the age of twenty to see the newly discovered oil fields.
He heard there workers complaining about a wax similar to the deposition of paraffin called "rod wax", which they often had to remove from the steel rods of the pumps, but they found that annoying substance a sedative ointment and a healer for burns and wounds, and this aroused Chesibro's interest, so he collected samples of rod wax and carried them to his house and proceeded to examine them
Eleven years passed and he worked in filtering and purifying the precipitate, and most of the ointments at that time were made of animal fats and vegetable oils, and they were exposed to damage if kept for a long time.
Chesibro thought that this substance of oily origin, free of rancidity and bad smell, might become a much-needed ointment.
In order to test its efficacy, he inflicted cuts, scrapes and burns on his skin and treated them with rod wax. When the efficacy of this ointment was confirmed. Chesebro established the first factory to manufacture the new balm, which he called "Vaseline" in 1870.
Today, Vaseline, the jelly-like liquid with its blue and white label, is sold in 140 countries
Consumers have found the most abundant ways to use it, so fishermen use it as bait in their hooks
Women use it to remove make-up from their eyes, and swimmers paint their bodies with it before diving into the icy water. Car owners also paint the ends of battery cables from corrosion.
Robert Chesebrow died in 1933 at the age of 96, and when he was ill, he coated himself from head to toe with balm and said that Vaseline owed his long life.
